commission — charles wright house 1998
This commission was for the three wall niches at the front and back of a house in Springfield, South
Australia. Of Bauhaus design, the house was built in the 1950s, and designed by architect Russell Ellis
who was renowned at the time for his Art Deco style.
The spring flower gardens were flamboyantly coloured and a swimming pool was visible from the back
so I chose the imagery to tie in with these themes.
Mr Wright gave me free hand with all aspects of the design after approving the test piece I made first …
a characteristic highly desirable in a client!
The imagery was developed by making torn and cut paper collages first, and then cutting stencils to
create the shapes.
