It was Vietnamese New Year, the year of the horse, so the Tet flag was flying everywhere. For the first
time in many years fireworks were to be set off and excitement was in the air. The beautiful temples, with
gorgeous red and gold interiors, were crowded as people paid their respects to their ancestors.
Huge red balloons were floating from the red-painted Huc bridge connecting Ngoc Son Temple on the island
in the Hoan Kiem lake to the shore … brushing against one led to a powdery red residue decorating one’s
clothes.
